Congratulations to Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River Brewing Co., Santa Rosa, Calif., crowned the new "Alpha King" last Friday during GABF week at Falling Rock Tap House, in Denver! Cilurzo's Pliny the Elder took first place in the 2007 Alpha King Challenge. The Alpha King crown returns to the State of California after a 1-year hiatus in Washington State (by 2006 winner Boundary Bay Brewing). It marks a second appearance in Alpha King's Top Three for Cilurzo and Pliney the Elder, after having achieved 2nd place in the 2005 Alpha King Challenge.

Second place went to another brewer recognized before, Larry Bell's Two Hearted Ale from Bell's Brewing Co., Galesburg, MI, who won the inaugural Alpha King Challenge eight years ago in 1999. Third place went to a new person from a familiar company to Alpha King Challenge's top 3: Noah Regnery, of Pizza Port-San Clemente, Calif., for his El Camino IPA.

Hopunion's Ralph Olson presented each of the top three brewers at this year's Alpha King Challenge with a small cash prize, a gift certificate for yeast from White Labs and a special gift stein from Rastal glassware of Germany. The official Alpha King mascot also joined the festivities as Three Floyds Brewing Company's Barnaby Struve sported the big green monster costume. In addition, since Vinnie Cilurzo was not at Falling Rock at the time of the official crowning ceremony, White Labs' Susan Smith was a temporary stand-in, wearing the crown of hops on behalf of Russian River.

A record 85 beers from around the United States competed in this year's eighth-annual Alpha King Challenge. A team of 18 judges including brewers and beer writers selected the top three beers in a blind tasting. This year, for the first time we want to recognize the other eight beers that made it to the final round. Here are the other eight "Alpha King Finalists" for 2007 (in alphabetical order):

Ballast Point Brewing Co., San Diego, CA, "Sculpin IPA" brewed by Yuseff Churney & Colby Chandler; Barley Brown's Brewing Co., Baker City, OR, "Tankslapper IPA" brewed by Shawn Kelso; El Toro Brewing Co., Morgan Hill, CA, "Deuce Imperial IPA" brewed by Geno Acevedo; Marin Brewing Co., Larkspur, CA, "White Knuckle Double IPA" brewed by Arne Johnson; Pizza Port, Carlsbad, CA, "Wipeout IPA" brewed by Jeff Bagby; Pizza Port, Carlsbad, CA, "Hop Suey Double IPA" brewed by Jeff Bagby Sacramento Brewing Co., Sacramento, CA, "Smokey's Imperial Red Ale" brewed by Peter Hoey Willoughby Brewing Co., Willoughby, OH, "Hopnotic Double Red IPA" brewed by Jack Kephart.

The contest is sponsored by Hopunion LLC, Brewing News, and Three Floyds Brewing Co., and takes its name from Three Floyds' Alpha King Pale Ale. Special thanks to Linda Norton and Gregg Wiggins from Brewing News for help with onsite organization and to Chris Black and the rest of the staff from Falling Rock Tap House, for their generosity in hosting the event.
